There is increasing evidence to suggest that dopamine may not be as central to the pathogenesis of schizophrenia as previously believed. Here, Mark Greener provides an overview of studies supporting the primary role of glutamate in the development of schizophrenia and discusses its potential as a novel therapeutic target.
